Steve's Next Boat

Below are the details around my current boat, challenges, and things I'm looking for in a future boat. I keep this updated with the latest info.

Current Boat Challenges

  • Driving locations - flybridge gets wet/hard to see, lower driving station is just a station, not a pilot house.
  • Range - 300 gallons of diesel in a boat that uses more than a gallon a mile means less than 300 NM of range.
  • Holding tank size - 25-30 gallons!
  • Stability at anchor - this boat rocks and rolls with the slightest wave unlike any other boat I've had. Once it starts, it is hard to stop. I have flop stopper stabilizers, but I would like for this to not be an issue.
  • Engine hours - currently at 4700 hours on dual Volvo Penta TAMD61A's

General Requirements

  • 50 to 55 feet size - 60 might be an option but only with really good controls
  • Fast trawler preferred - I like going 10+ knots if needed, but traditional trawler a possibility if appointed well
  • 30 years or newer

Must Haves

  • Pilot house
  • Sedan style entrance from cockpit to salon - OK to have stairs to PH and other locations
  • Decent MPG and/or tankage to allow for trips of 500NM+ without refueling
  • Queen master berth
  • 1-2 other berths
  • Hydronic heat + hot water heated via hydronic loop
  • Watermaker
  • Washer/dryer
  • Well known engine brand with moderate hours left before major overhauls. I prefer Detroit Diesel and CAT but others are OK too
  • Console dinghy
  • Bow thruster
  • Room in engine room / pilot house for all of my internet and electrical testing
  • Arch or place for antennas and internet testing
  • Ground tackle with at least 300 feet of chain
  • Windlass controls from driving station(s) and bow
  • Fresh and raw water wash downs at bow and in cockpit
  • Space for solar panels (does not need to have them existing)
  • Good sized holding tanks
  • Galley with fridge/freezer, stove, oven, and good storage
  • Cockpit entertaining space
  • Autopilot - all other electronics optional :)
  • 9-15kw generator
  • 50 amp or dual 30 amp shore power connectors

Nice to Have

  • Air conditioning
  • Stabilizers underway
  • Stern dinghy davit instead of crane
  • Stern thruster
  • Remote thruster control / cockpit driving/docking station
  • Dishwasher
  • Trash compactor
  • Flybridge - covered or uncovered - and entertaining space
  • Shore power connectors at multiple places
  • Shore power isolation transformer / galvanic isolation / ELCI
  • Engine throttle synchronizer
  • Oil change system
  • Tank level monitoring system(s)
  • Chain counter
