Once you hit that 30 day mark, you have three choices: 1. Upgrade to a Priority Plan ($$) 2. Change your plan to the country you're in (hard to do) 3. Return to your home country The Priority Plan options are quite a bit more expensive than Roam Unlimited, changing your country isn't always an option, and returning isn't either for long term and long distance cruisers! ## Personal Maritime Plan Here's what Starlink sent out in email about the new Personal Maritime Plan: STARLINK Stay Connected on the Water Your Starlink has operated at sea in the past year. We have a new plan—****Personal Maritime**—for people who use Starlink on a vessel and stay on the water for extended periods before returning to their home country. Your current Roam plan includes coverage in territorial waters, with Ocean Mode as a paid option beyond 12 nautical miles. International use is limited to 30 days at a time outside your registered home country, after which you can return home to continue service. Effective September 27, Ocean Mode will be $6/GB. If that 30-day limit doesn’t fit how you travel, Personal Maritime may be the better option. Introducing Personal Maritime Personal Maritime keeps you connected on the water as you move between countries, without the 30-day Roam travel limit. - $185/month USD, excluding applicable taxes - ****Unlimited data and use in territorial waters worldwide** - Ocean Mode available beyond 12 nautical miles for $6/GB - No 30-day Roam international travel limit, except in extremely rare cases when required by local regulations This plan is for ****small personal vessels**—not yachts or commercially operated vessels (including ferries and commercial fishing)—and is not intended for use on land. Thank you for choosing Starlink. I believe the hundreds (possibly thousands) of boaters who contacted Starlink, worked with Support, and in some cases spoke with Starlink executives, finally convinced them there was a real case for a plan tailored to boaters traveling internationally for extended periods. It's a good example of a community banding together to push a for-profit corporation to keep providing what many see as an essential service, with few alternatives that aren't significantly pricier or missing key features. ## Personal Maritime Summarized - New Plan called Personal Maritime for people who are on the water and away from their home country for more than 30 days. - Personal Maritime is $185 USD (for my locale) which is $10 more than Roam Unlimited. - Ocean Mode went from $2/GB to $6/GB. - Personal Maritime is only available via a dedicated support ticket, and requires proof you're using it on a recreational vessel **40 feet or less** (registration, hull ID, etc.). - Not for fishing/commercial/large yachts. - Grouped Countries are still able to use Roam Unlimited (see below). ## 40 Foot Length Limit According to Starlink's [legal document around plans](https://starlink.com/legal/documents/DOC-1728-44881-79?fbclid=IwY2xjawT9lsNwZG9mBWV4dG4DYWVtAjEwAGJyaWQRMU1LYWZOam1XUlRZQW1NS1BzcnRjBmFwcF9pZBAyMjIwMzkxNzg4MjAwODkyAAEeDEZkOheMvkARPb4YRy6tzhQwJsxYzJ16qlpQE5nJOzAno6Laz5zATGrD9%5Fw%5Faem%5FA-JAcTPgZHoB8RSNT4PC8g&ref=seabits.com): The Personal Maritime plan is available exclusively for personal, small watercraft use. Use on larger craft or yachts (e.g., watercraft exceeding 40 ft. in length overall) is prohibited. While this is a great size, it does cut out a bunch of boats that would still in most countries be considered a recreational boat. This is where it gets muddy, as the US Coast Guard considers anything over 26 feet a yacht (!!), the International Yacht Brokers Association uses 40 feet, and the EU in places considers anything over 24 meters (approx 78 feet). I guess they had to start somewhere. ## What About US/Canada/Europe Grouped Countries? In the July 2026 update to Roam Unlimited, Starlink said travel between countries within the same group (see below) wouldn't count against the 30-day international limit: - US and Canada - A bunch of European Countries (see the [other article for a detailed list](https://seabits.com/starlink-roam-plan-changes/)) I wondered if Personal Maritime changed that, so I contacted Starlink support: ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/12/1c/121c16c6-2b59-4694-bbe8-29a61a7c2683/content/images/2026/08/Screenshot-2026-08-27-at-2.44.03---PM.png) Starlink support chat Here's the details from their response for ease of reading: *Thank you for reaching out. Yes, that is still the case. For Roam, the United States and Canada (and their associated territories) are treated as one country/region. Travel between the US and Canada does not count as international travel and does not use the 30-day Roam Unlimited allowance.* *You are not required to switch to the Personal Maritime plan for travel between Canada and the US on land. Personal Maritime is intended for use on small personal vessels on the water.* So, for those folks in the US/Canada/Europe Grouped Countries, nothing changes. You can continue using Roam Unlimited without any 30 day timers between those groupings. ## Summary After a lot of community pressure, it appears Starlink has provided folks with a plan specifically for recreational boaters that travel for more than 30 days away from their home countries. For $10 more per month, they can continue relying on Starlink (of course, until something else changes 😄). The only limit is that this plan is not for boats over 40 feet in length, which is still somewhat limiting. Ocean Mode has tripled in price from $2/GB to $6/GB which is expensive, but Starlink is definitely not a non-profit. Boaters in the US/Canada/Europe don't need to switch if they are in the grouped countries and travel to another one in the list. I'm sure there will be updates to this news, so keep an eye on this article for anything new in the next few days.
